Space, light and order. Anyone who moves through the world, sometimes loses sight of them, but our daily lives are subtly and less subtly controlled by these three concepts. Only sometimes do they catch us unawares. Which makes one wonder, are there places that are purely created with these ideas in mind? Try stripping a city of its pretty facades and removing the frills of its life. And look at what remains.
Femke den Hollander and Thomas Barbier have roamed places that do not thrive by keeping up appearances. Places that have been reduced to their pure essence. Places that only exist of space, light and order. In the inner harbor of Bruges they followed their intuition in an attempt to capture the feeling that overcomes a person when he or she enters an almost inhuman world.
'Haven' is the result of this photographic search. A series of photographs where the photographers not only relate themselves to their surroundings, but also to eachother. A nighttime stroll where the harbor becomes a symbol for the place of humanity in this world, but also how we shape the worlds around us. A thorough, poetic view on our existence.

Ruimte, licht en orde. Wie zich door de wereld begeeft, heeft er niet altijd meer aandacht voor, maar ons dagelijks bestaan wordt subtiel en minder subtiel beheerst door deze zaken. Het is soms op onverwachte momenten dat het ons overvalt. Maar er zijn plekken die louter daarop gericht zijn. Strip een stad van haar façades en haal de franjes van het leven weg. Wat blijft er dan nog over?
Femke den Hollander en Thomas Barbier doolden door een plek die het niet heeft van schone schijn, een plek die tot zuivere essentie is herleid. Een plek die uit niets anders bestaat dan ruimte, licht en orde. In de haven van Brugge volgen ze hun intuïtie, een poging om het gevoel te vangen dat een mens overheerst, wanneer die een bijna onmenselijke wereld binnenstapt.
'Haven' is de neerslag van die zoektocht. Een reeks foto’s waarin de fotografen niet alleen de dialoog met zichzelf in de omgeving aangaan, maar ook met elkaar. Een nachtelijke wandeling waarin de haven symbool staat voor de plek van de mens in de wereld, maar ook hoe die haar omgeving vorm geeft. Een doortastende, poëtische blik op ons bestaan.
